Mala Beads Questions

What are Mala beads?

Mala beads are a string of beads traditionally used in prayer and meditation. They can also be made from gemstones that match the intention of your practice.

Who can wear the jewelry?

The jewelry can be worn by anyone seeking a calmer mind, body, and spirit. Whether you’re a yogi, executive, fashionista, meditator, hippie, 9-5’er, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, teen, child… it doesn’t matter! Malas are suitable for everyone and does not discriminate.

What is the significance of having 108 beads in traditional Malas?

The number 108 is significant for numerous reasons. Some believe there are 108 stages on the journey of the human soul, while others believe there are 108 desires in mortals, matched by the same amount of lies and delusions. Some associate the possibility of enlightenment with taking only 108 breaths a day, while in deep meditation. Others connect the number’s significance to the heart chakra, as there is said to be 108 energy lines leading to it, one of which is believed to be the path to self realization.

How do I use a Mala?

While malas are often used to help count mantras during meditation, many people choose to use their mala in contexts outside of seated meditation. Wearing a mala as a bracelet or necklace is common as it helps keep your affirmations or intentions with you throughout the day. People may also choose to carry their mala in a mala bag that is kept in a pocket or purse as another way of keeping their practice with them as they move through their lives.

Other people keep their mala in their meditation shrine when it is not in use. A mala can become a beautiful feature of your sacred space, adding color, texture, and intention to your shrine. Finally, some people take their mala to yoga and coil it at the top of their yoga mats during practice. They believe this helps the mala absorb the energy of their physical practice and helps them carry their yoga practice with them when off the mat. Whichever way you choose to use your mala, mala beads can be a representative object of your intentions or affirmations and are powerful for helping focus the mind on that which you most hope to develop through your yoga and meditation practice.

Product Questions

How do I care for my Mala?

Although we know that you love your malas and want to take them everywhere, please treat them with care. They are not meant to be worn during yoga practice or any vigorous activity. Treat your malas with love, respect and sensitivity as they are handmade. Malas are a sort of rosary and although they may be worn as a constant reminder to stay focused on our journey they should be worn and hung with care.

Water and beads do not always mix… we advise taking your jewelry off before swimming and showering. The chemicals in pools and even the chlorine in drinking water have the potential to bleach even natural stones. The cording on your mala may be of natural fiber. Over time the soaps, oils, lotions, and salt from your skin and hand washing or showering with your beads will rot the cord. Even some synthetic cords can wear quickly when exposed to frequent moistures and residues from skin if worn constantly. Do not over stretch your jewelry. Strong stretch cord is used in jewelry-making and can withstand the usual on and off stretching – but this does not mean it’s indestructible. Care should be used to avoid unnecessary over-stretching.

Because our tassels are made with silk thread, it may at times develop static cling. Simply moisten your hand with water and give your tassel a few gentle squeezes, the static should dissipate.

How do I choose my size for a bracelet?

Simply wrap a piece of string snugly just above or just below your wrist bone. Make sure to mark the spot where it begins to overlap then lay the string on a ruler to find your measurement.

Will my items look the same as in the pictures?

Though we do our best to provide an accurate representation of the actual item, there may some differences due differences in individual monitor’s settings, flash used in photographing and photo enlargement.

Please keep in mind that all bracelets and necklaces are individually handcrafted and are made from natural wood and stones. Your beads may have variations in marking, colour and texture but will be very similar. Since gemstones and wood are natural and come from the Earth, there could be small variations in their color, shape, etc. Nature is imperfect and that’s what makes it so unique!

Is it possible to have an allergic reaction?

All of our jewelry is made of genuine-all natural materials and like anything found in nature; with that being said, there is a possibility of an allergic reaction when we come into contact with these materials – either through the skin or by breathing. Allergic reactions can produce such symptoms as a rash, congestion, sneezing, etc. If you feel that are experiencing any type of allergy-related symptom, please discontinue using or wearing the item and consult a medical professional immediately.

Where are your products made?

All of our jewelry products are hand made, including the silk tassels! Our malas are mostly designed and created by our house artisan right here in the Westcoast of Canada.

We also feature handcrafted items from PRC and Nepal. We believe the locals of Hou Fu Village and Liu Yang City deserve to earn a means of living to support their families just like those from other regions of the world.

Our wooden products are carefully sourced from a wood manufacturer adhering to government regulations and supervision regarding the collection of wood specimen. Because there is no treatment with chemicals or dyes, all of our wooden jewelry emits a distinctive natural fragrance.
